Overview

Makalu base camp trek, the home of world’s fifth highest mountain Mt.
Makalu, is renowned destination among the adventure lovers. If you admire
natural beauty and snowy peaks beside wilderness this is the place you
have wished for.
The most isolated and exhilarating in the nation, the Makalu basecamp trek
is one of the most popular trekking routes. Featuring the fifth highest peak
in the world, Mt. Makalu, the trail passes through serene jungle and village
in the mid-hills taking us up to the sacred alpine landscape of Makalu-
Barun National Park. The neighboring regions are Sagarmatha National
Park and Khumbu region the most see regions in the Himalayan Kingdom.
After a short flight to Tumlingtar airport from Kathamndu, the journey
ascends along the Arun Khola (river), and eventually mounts to Makalu
Base Camp. Trekkers enjoy magnificent biodiversity, and cultural diversity
along the trail that rises from 500m to 5000m.
Trekkers will have chance to observe verities of rhododendron (national
flower of Nepal) forests on the way. Jaw-dropping cliffs, glaciers, and
waterfalls offer life time experience. The region is home for indigenous
ethnic communities of Nepal including Tamang, Rai and Sherpa among
others. The trek takes 5 days to reach the basecamp, and it requires park
entry permit and a TISM card to enter Makalu-Barun national park.

    • Arrival in Kathmandu where an Orbit Nepal Adventure representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Overnight at hotel.

    • This day we will gives you the diteals information about trekking program and coordinate any last-minute arrangements. After/before the staff meeting, we will take you sightseeing with a tour guide to visit the highlights of Kathmandu - Pashupatinath, Boudhanath Stupa, Swaymbhunath and Patan Durbar Square.

    • Start the day with a scenic mountain flight to Tumlingtar, offering sweeping aerial views of the Himalayas. Once you arrive, meet your driver and begin the 4–5 hour drive to Num.
      The road winds through green hills, farmland, and small settlements before reaching this hilltop village.

    • Your trekking adventure begins today. Descend steeply through thick forest to the Arun River, cross a suspension bridge, and then climb gradually toward Seduwa.
      The trail is challenging but rewarding, surrounded by colourful vegetation and rural scenery. Seduwa also serves as an entry checkpoint for the Makalu-Barun National Park.

    • Walk through terraced fields and small villages as the trail gently ascends. Meet friendly locals and enjoy the peaceful rural lifestyle.
      As you near Tashigaon, the path becomes steeper. Tashigaon is the last permanent village on this trekking route and offers wonderful views of nearby hills and peaks.

    • Prepare for a tougher day as you climb through dense forests filled with rhododendron and oak trees. Though the trail is steep, the quiet environment and forest beauty make it enjoyable.
      Khongma Danda sits on a ridge with sweeping mountain views.

    • Today’s route includes several steep ups and downs, leading you to the famous Shipton La Pass. From here, you’ll get impressive views of Makalu and surrounding peaks.
      The trail then continues across rocky terrain before descending to Dobato.

    • Descend through forests, past meadows, waterfalls, and clear streams.
      Yangle Kharka is a peaceful valley sheltered by towering mountains—an ideal place to relax after the day’s walk.

    • Spend the day adjusting to the altitude. Take short hikes around the valley, enjoy the views of glaciers and mountains, and give your body time to rest and recover.
      Hydration and light activity help prepare you for higher elevations ahead.

    • Trek through alpine meadows and rocky sections as you gradually climb higher. The thin air makes this stretch more demanding, but the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic.
      Langma Le Kharka is remote and simple, offering a true wilderness feel

    • One of the most exciting days of the trek. Follow rocky and rugged trails as you approach the mighty Mount Makalu.
      Makalu Base Camp sits at 4,870m, surrounded by glaciers and towering ridges—a highlight of the entire journey.

    • Spend the day exploring the base camp area. Hike to viewpoints for spectacular panoramas featuring Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, and other Himalayan giants.
      Use this time to relax, take photos, and enjoy the peaceful high-altitude landscape.

    • Retrace your steps and descend along rocky paths and alpine meadows. Although easier than the ascent, the descent still requires steady pacing and focus.
      Enjoy the transition from high alpine terrain back to lush valleys.

    • Continue your return journey through familiar trails involving both ascents and descents.
      Pause at scenic viewpoints to soak in the last wide-open Himalayan views before reaching Khongma Danda.

    • Descend through forest paths and terraced fields filled with vibrant vegetation.
      Arrive in Seduwa and enjoy a well-deserved rest after several demanding trekking days.

    • Walk down to the Arun River, cross suspension bridges, and admire the tranquil river landscapes.
      From the riverbank, begin your drive back to Tumlingtar, passing through rural hills and farming villages.

    • Catch your morning flight back to Kathmandu. After checking into your hotel, spend the rest of the day exploring local markets, temples, or simply relaxing.

    • Your Makalu Base Camp Trek comes to an end. Orbit Nepal Adventure team will transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
